Psychedelics have been widely used for thousands of years

nearly everywhere on the planet. Psychoactive plants have

been central to most ancient sacred rituals and primitive

medical treatments. They have been worshipped in all cultures

as “Plants of the Gods“ and considered as mediators

between human beings and the universe, linking the physical

to the spiritual dimensions of existence.

In January 2006 the International Symposium “LSD – Problem

Child and Wonder Drug“ took place at the occasion

of the 100th birthday of Dr. Albert Hofmann, the discoverer

of LSD. Several thousand visitors and more than 200 media

people from 37 countries gathered in Basel to hear speeches

from scientists and historians, to exchange ideas and

disseminate information. It was the biggest conference

of its kind worldwide. For the first time since the turbulent

1960s, a wide range of psychedelic issues and topics has

been brought back to public discussion and re-evaluation.

The World Psychedelic Forum will expand upon this renewed

interest, presenting a unique opportunity for experts,

researchers, and interested persons from all around the

globe, to exchange views and hear presentations of the

latest research on the value of these remarkable psychedelic

substances in medicine, psychology, science, religion,

culture and the arts.

The term “psychedelic“ is derived from the Greek “psyche“

(soul) and “delos“ (manifest), and means a state in which

the soul manifests itself. It was coined in 1956 by psychiatrist

Humphry Osmond, in a now-famous exchange with

writer Aldous Huxley; both recognized the potential of these

compounds for self-awareness, and their correspondence

to psychoactive plants held sacred for millennia.

Albert Hofmann experienced the extraordinary mental

effects of LSD in the context of his work as a chemist in

1943. He so was placing a cornerstone for new insights

and knowledge about by the time unexplored consciousness

expanding substances. The following decade saw

the publication of thousands of research papers about the

nature and the effects of LSD, mescaline and psilocybin. But

when LSD got out of the laboratories and “out of control“,

to be used for self-exploration by 1960s youth, Western governments

generally declared psychoactive substances a

menace, claimed it had no psychological, educational or

therapeutic value, and linked it to dangerous and addictive

narcotics. With a compliant mainstream media that

sensationalized and parroted the official drug policy, the

“authorities“ not only prohibited research on these sacred

compounds but criminalized the users, a situation that has

prevailed ever since, except for example in the Netherlands

and in Switzerland.

The classic psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin from magic

mushrooms, mescaline from peyote and ayahuasca – the

Amazonian “Vine of the Soul“ – are not drugs in the traditional

sense but belong, according to Albert Hofmann “concerning

their chemical structure and their pharmacological

effects, to the sacred substances, rediscovered through

LSD, and used in ritual settings for thousands of years.“

They are characterized by the fact that they are neither toxic

nor addictive, and have the power to bestow benefits of

both practical and transcendental value.

The global youth movement, that peaked some forty years

ago with the “Summer of Love“, was fueled by psychedelics.

A historical view shows, that the “consciousness-expanded“

hippie counterculture exerted an enduring influence

on society. Without the soul-opening and sensory stimulus

of psychedelics, many of the social, cultural and ecological

advances taken for granted today would be absent from

our lives.

In 1992, GIANNI VERSACE did an unusual choice spending $ 8 million to buy CASA CASUARINA that became the only private residence on Ocean Drive in Miami.

The wealthy and his celebrity friends, such as Madonna and Sylvester Stallone, were buying homes - set far behind guarded gates - in mainland Miami on Brickell Avenue, known as Millionaire's Row.

After many more poured millions Gianni created a once described "gay baroque" style at CASA CASUARINA.

The famous pool was lined in millions of litlle coloured slabs of marble, hand crafted in Milan and dispatched to Miami by plane.

All printed fabrics, silk and satin duchesse, velvet or embroiderie used through the house were created by Gianni, especially for CASA CASUARINA, and those custom designs were later introduced in his HOME COLLECTION.

Thirty-five rooms stuffed in six hundred items. Mahogany, gold, carved wood panels, tiles, frescoes, stained glass windows, beamed ceilings, silk.

What did GOD give you that`s special?
I can’t be precise about myself. Quoting the Duchess of Windsor “I’m nothing to look at …”

We notice a CHAV inspired look in some of your work, is this your time in Britian that has developed this?
Apart from the fact that it turns me on, I found myself living in east London, which has a story of poverty and social deprivation that unconsciously led me towards documenting this aesthetic. And then I think there’s that Freud theory defending that the opposites attract.

If we gave you a hundred thousand pound BUDGET for a New Breed shoot, what would be your concept and how would you blow our minds?
I would film a remake of Napoleon’s coronation in Notre-Dame, starring Pete Burns as Napoleon himself. (Jacques-Louis David’s painting attached is a good mood board for it)

I’m all for superstars, in Dalston or Versailles. What I’m against is the lack of identity brought by massification. We live in a corporate orientated society, where we are told what to eat, how to dress, it is a bit like that Daft Punk tune “Television Rules the Nation”.

And finally, whats your advice to our lovely New Breeders?
A I have a very atypical pattern of doing and achieving things, so I might not be the right person to give advice, I’m no expert, I’m only starting. I think a very good dose of sense humour, visual culture and references, surrounding yourself with the right people and avoiding reality as much as possible whilst keeping your feet on the ground.

An enormous photograph of Berenson is the first thing I see as she opens the door to her elegant apartment, furnished in reds, gold and leopard print. The picture, by Robert Mapplethorpe, depicts Berenson at the height of her fame in an oversized leather jacket with slicked back hair and that cool self-possession that characterises many of the images in a just-published lavish biography, Marisa Berenson, A Life in Pictures. The subtitle is no exaggeration. Berenson has been immortalised by most of the great photographers of the past few decades. Even her christening portrait was in Vogue . ‘The Song’ is about a world that is rushing ahead of itself, dashing at an ever faster tempo. A world whose acceleration is increasing to the extent that standstill seems inevitable. As ever, at the heart of this whirlwind of change stands the body, at the eye of the storm. As a sounding board in a reality that is chaotically transforming.

In ‘The Song’, ten dancers – nine men and one woman – stand on an empty stage. It is stripped to its bare essentials. To the elementary constituents of theatre: light, sound and movement. The acting area marked out by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, together with the artists Ann Veronica Janssens and Michel François, is a desert. The arid land which in spite of itself gives life to new possibilities: a playful solo in which the body seeks out its own weightlessness or a group choreography like a flock of birds in full flight, the constantly shifting patterns at the same time a sample of mathematical precision and human inventiveness.

In En Atendant, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is taking a new step in her exploration of the combination of music and dance. After Bach and Webern in Zeitung, The Beatles in The Song and Mahler in 3Abschied, this time her starting point is the Ars Subtilior: a complex and intellectual form of polyphonic music from the 14th century that is based on dissonance and contrast. Ars Subtilior developed on the ruins of the plague and the Church at a time when the social, political and religious pillars of mediaeval society were fragmenting. Nowadays this upheaval seems more relevant than ever. In the light of today’s increasingly confusing events and the complexity of the choices we face, the question of our mortality and physicality is becoming ever more crucial.
